I am not African because I was born in Africa but because Africa was born in me. Thses immortal words by the legendary pan-African leader, Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, succintly captures the essence of this global Africa Day celebration. On 25 May 1963, Africa made history with the foundation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) which brought the Continent together. Since then, the 25 May has been celebrated widely across the world particularly in Africa to signify Africa’s identity and unity.
Referring to this year’s celebrations, the African Union Commission says Africa’s young people are an enormous resource for the continent’s development. It is in this regard that African Union Heads of State and Government declared the theme for 2017 as ‘Harnessing the Demographic Dividend through Investments in Youth’.
Our great continent has indeed come a long way despite its myriad challenges; at the end of the day, we can either focus on what’s tearing us apart, or choose to focus on what’s keeping us together.
Here are amazing pictures from around the continent to celebrate our unique heritage!
